I have noticed a large gap in the willingness of many parents of teens to discuss the realities of raising a teen...everything is either "really good" all the time with their teen, or "really bad". I also see a huge difference in my daughter's take on individual classmates, and feedback I get from parents and teachers; the adults say everyone loves her, she is well respected, and she gets elected to many leadership roles. On the other hand, she has a lot of critical things to say TO ME about many of the classmates....wondering if she is just venting to me, or if she is "acting" happy at school and is not...I try not to be critical and just let her have her say, but then wonder if there is something more I should be paying attention to...."

Dads & Daughters

On Thursday I spoke with about 20 dads about their parenting experiences.
We talked about activities they can share with their daughters, how to be good male role models for girls, and the difficult topic of how to respond to daughters lovingly and with the right amount of rules and protection.

I came away impressed with these devoted dads, and also with a sense that it is not always easy being a dad of a daughter in modern times.
There doesn't seem to be a great deal of support (informal or formal) between men on how to parent effectively & compassionately.

If you are a dad, or know a dad of a girl, do you have any insights on 1) how to keep close to your daughter or 2) find support for yourself as a parent?
